Balulalow, another word for ‘lullaby’, is a 16th-Century Scottish Christmas carol, possibly after Martin Luther's Vom Himmel hoch. Here, Mary is singing softly to the newborn Jesus, and in this setting you can hear the gentle rocking of the child in the repeated, lilting balulalow ostinato, throughout the voice parts.
Inspired by Celtic folk traditions and the sound world of women’s voices, this piece showcases the rich blend and impressive vocal dexterity that an upper voice ensemble can offer.
