Called into growth
Words: The Revd Mother Carrie Thompson
Tune: Willow Lane by Don Gillthorpe
1. Called into growth at dayspring of creation,
See how I graced the garden of delight,
Till human drive for pride and domination
Sowed seeds of strife and marred that perfect light.
2. Rough-hewn I was, and sawn for humble stable,
Cut without care for manger and for stall,
Formed into fishing skiff and simple table:
The shape of service and the common call.
3. Bleak was my lot, and barren my vocation,
No fruit or flower or foliage did I bear;
Dark was the hour of death and desolation,
My branches burdened with the world’s despair.
4. Life is my call, the power of death defeated,
Where pain is healed and tears are wiped away,
Life is my gift, the work of love completed,
The boundless blossom of that endless day.
