This carol was inspired by the many versions of While shepherds watched their flocks by night found throughout the UK. It aims to marry a modern-sounding tune and harmony with the rich harmonies of the folk-carol and shapenote singing traditions. The song follows the convention of naming hymn tunes after places, in this case a road in Glasgow where the tune was composed.
