When I first heard this Ukrainian folk melody I was moved by the vivid contrast between the peaceful domestic scene suggested in the text – a cat purring by the fire, a beloved child asleep - and the harsh reality of life in so many war-torn regions of Ukraine today. The original, beautiful melody is preserved, but that tension is reflected in the gentle harmonic dissonances which creep in from the third verse onwards and which are never fully resolved. Singers should aim for a rocking, lullaby feel throughout and keep the principal melody to the fore.
