Roots is a song about the quiet power of unseen support, whether that's the sprawling root network of a plant, or our metaphorical human equivalent. The first half talks about the natural world, while the second explores the concept of roots as something we inherit, and something we can choose to put down. It uses a simple folk-inspired melody split between two voice parts, with the option of a third. The initial inspiration for this song was actually a potato, which isn’t very poetic, but nicely captures the idea of something beautiful springing from humble roots!
