A note from the composer:

Sudden Light was written for my best friend Zara Wright’s wedding to Andreas Pampoulides and was performed by a choir of friends as part of the wedding ceremony. It was a secular wedding and so the text chosen was one of love, passion, and excitement but without the religious elements often heard as such occasions. It was a small choir with short rehearsal time so the piece, whilst presenting some challenges, is, I hope, singable, accessible and immediate. The style bears some of the syllabic influence of Finzi so that the words are clear, with the occasional ecstatic melisma for important moments. The poem is a beautiful text describing the feelings of falling in love with someone new, but that feeling that when you meet the perfect match there is that sense that you may have met them before, such is the feeling of happiness experienced. Performances should be filled with the thrilling rush that such emotions bring.
