A note from the composer:
The Gift to Sing was composed for the 30th Anniversary of the Chester Choral week where singers from all over the the country gather for a week of singing; both a major work and in smaller-scale pieces. We are now back to full strength after the Covid pandemic stopped us from singing. James Weldon Johnson’s text expresses the importance of singing in mental health matters; to so many of us it is an inherent part of our being. In setting this text I wanted to convey that important feeling, recognising that not even a global pandemic can stop us. The music wears its heart firmly on its sleeve, for which I make no apology, and choirs should strive to do the same in their performance.
