This effervescent carol perfectly encapsulates the joy of Christmas, setting George Woodward’s rousing text. The music is scored for unaccompanied mixed voice choir and features syncopated rhythms, ringing “merry church bells”, jaunty melodies and counter-melodies, and some hurdy-gurdy-like ostinato moments. This carol would partner perfectly with Blessed be that Maid Marie, suiting a competent choir, as both pieces share similar rhythmic interest, some challenging twists and turns, and texts by Woodward. Conductors should make their own judicious choices regarding how to interpret/negotiate the ‘dings’ and ‘dongs’!
