The Blackthorn Carol is the Annunciation story, set in the cold March of the English countryside – traditionally known as the blackthorn winter. Mary is afraid, of course, but at the same time she realises that she is part of the spring; that the child she will have is as natural as the plants beginning to grow beneath her feet. The primrose is part of that English landscape, but is also the rosa sine spina – like Mary herself in medieval symbolism, the rose without a thorn. The jagged boughs anticipate the crucifixion; the crown of primroses reminds us of Mary’s role as Queen of Heaven.
